Exploring the Key Pillars of Pauper: A Deep Dive into the Format's Staples

Discover the essential cards that define Pauper, their roles in various decks, and the current metagame landscape.
Howdy folks! It's time yet again for another edition of The Power of Pauper! This week, we're diving into some of the key pillar Pauper cards that define the format. Pauper has continuously shifted over time, and it’s a good time to take a look at what the current key pillars of the format really are. Some of these have stayed the same, while others have changed over time.
The Key Pillars of Pauper#
-
<card-ref:Kor Skyfisher> / <card-ref:Glint Hawk>
These cards tend to go hand-in-hand in any deck they show up in. As long as your deck has permanents that you want to replay for an effect or artifacts that do things on ETB, these cards tend to be very good. They can be aggro cards or midrange cards and work just as well. -
<card-ref:Fanatical Offering> / <card-ref:Reckoner's Bargain> / <card-ref:Eviscerator's Insight>
This group of pillar cards focuses on sacrificing cards to draw more cards. They are build-arounds in multiple styles of decks, such as Affinity and Orzhov midrange. -
<card-ref:Ichor Wellspring> / card-ref:Lembas
These artifacts provide value when they enter the battlefield and when they go to the graveyard, making them versatile across all of Pauper. -
<card-ref:Tolarian Terror>
Occupying space in an entire subset of Pauper strategies, this card enables decks focused around casting cheap spells to bring out a large creature. -
Artifact Lands
Affinity has long been a major pillar of Pauper, and the existence of Artifact lands is crucial for its viability. -
<card-ref:Cleansing Wildfire>
This card interacts powerfully with the Bridge lands, enabling multiple decks in both control and midrange capacities. -
<card-ref:Utopia Sprawl> / <card-ref:Wild Growth>
These cards allow Gruul decks to ramp mana, pushing out threats earlier than usual. -
Tron Lands
Tron has made a comeback in Pauper with various deck types, making it a key pillar in the format. -
<card-ref:Avenging Hunter>
This card has seen play in various archetypes and is a key pillar due to its ability to create a sub-game around the Initiative.
Weekly MTGO Recap#
This past week saw a normal schedule of events. The metagame was heavily skewed towards aggressive strategies, with Mono Red Madness leading the pack, followed closely by Grixis Affinity and Dimir Terror. These decks showcase the dynamic nature of Pauper and its evolving strategies.
As we continue to explore Pauper, it's clear that these key pillars not only define the format but also influence the strategies players adopt. If you feel I missed something, let me know!
